About Gapsted
Gapsted is a locality in the Ovens Valley of north-eastern Victoria, in the Alpine Shire about 8 kilometres north-east of Myrtleford in the foothills of the Stanley Range. During the gold rushes it was a rest stop for diggers heading to the Buckland Valley and Morses Creek diggings, and reef mining around Gapsted began in 1856, with some fifty mines established in the district. Today it is a small farming community and cool-climate wine-growing area, home to the Gapsted Estate winery on the Great Alpine Road, which sits alongside the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.
