About Steiglitz (Vic.)
Steiglitz is a locality in the Brisbane Ranges in Victoria, between Geelong and Ballarat. It was a busy gold-mining township from the mid-1850s, when gold was found on land held by the von Stieglitz family, becoming the state's first quartz-mining area. The easily won gold was worked out by the late 1870s and the last mine closed in 1941; the abandoned town is now preserved within the Steiglitz Historic Park.
