About Sutton Grange
Sutton Grange is a rural locality in the Shire of Mount Alexander in central Victoria, about 30 kilometres south of Bendigo in granite hill country below Mount Alexander. A school and post office opened here in 1865, and the granite school building designed by architect Thomas Muntz, built in 1870, still stands. The area has an early pastoral history: in 1848 run overseer William Lockhart Morton invented the sheep drafting race and gate here. A cheese factory that later won prizes at Victorian shows operated until 1927.
