About Strangways
Strangways is a locality in central Victoria on the Loddon River, between the townships of Guildford, Newstead and Clydesdale, spanning the Shire of Hepburn and Mount Alexander Shire. It is on Dja Dja Wurrung country. The locality grew during the gold rushes after alluvial gold was found in the Loddon River, when a Chinese camp of up to 3,000 diggers was established at the junction of the river and Jim Crow Creek. Gold dredging continued in the area until 1954, and a railway station served Strangways from 1893 to 1977.
