About Marong
Marong is a rural town in the City of Greater Bendigo in Victoria, located 17 kilometres west of Bendigo and 157 kilometres northwest of Melbourne. The name is derived from a Djadjawurrung word for the Murray River Pine. A post office opened on 1 January 1860 and the Marong Road District was proclaimed on 19 August 1860 as the first local government in the area, later redesignated as a shire in 1864 and a Rural City in 1990 before being abolished and amalgamated into Greater Bendigo City Council on 2 December 1994. The town is at the junction of the Calder Highway and Calder Alternate Highway. Marong is home to the Marong Panthers Australian rules football team competing in the Loddon Valley Football League.
