About Smythes Creek
Smythes Creek is a rural locality in the City of Ballarat and Golden Plains Shire in western Victoria, located approximately 10 kilometres west of the Ballarat central business district. Named after Captain John James Barlow Smythe who held a pastoral lease of the Nintingbool run from 1846, the area was originally known as Nentingbull derived from the Indigenous word Nunkunbool meaning morning star. The nearby town of Smythesdale was known as Smythe's Creek until 1864. Located in the Victorian goldfields region, the locality has the Nintingbool Vineyard, a family-owned winery producing Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Rose. The area is predominantly rural and farming with growing residential development.
