About Mitchell Park (Vic.)
Mitchell Park is a suburb on the north-western fringe of Ballarat in Victoria, about 7 km from the city centre. It is best known as the home of Ballarat Airport, which was established in 1940 as a Royal Australian Air Force base for training wireless air gunners under the Empire Air Training Scheme, the first of only three such schools nationally and the only one in Victoria. The airfield remained with the RAAF until 1961, when it passed to the City of Ballarat and continued as a civil airport, and the former base is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
