About Miners Rest
Miners Rest is a semi-rural suburb on the north-western fringe of Ballarat in Victoria, about 11 km from the city centre. The township, surveyed in 1854, was named as a camping and resting place for miners travelling to the gold diggings, lying midway between the Clunes and Buninyong goldfields on Burrumbeet Creek. A school opened there in 1858, and the nearby Dowling Forest racecourse has hosted Ballarat Turf Club meetings since that era.
