About Brown Hill (Vic.)

Brown Hill is a suburb of Ballarat, Victoria, on the eastern rural-urban fringe of the city about 5 kilometres from the central business district. It began in the 1850s as a gold-mining hamlet on the Yarrowee River, and its name is a corruption of Brownbill's Hill, after the prospector William Brownbill, who found gold there in 1851. The district's Eureka National School opened in 1853.
