About North Yelta
North Yelta is a rural locality at the northern end of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, on the outskirts of Moonta in the region known as the Copper Triangle. The locality's history is tied to the copper boom: the Yelta Mine, which straddles its boundary with neighbouring Yelta, opened in 1864 and was later worked by a French company and then as a State enterprise, with its smelter ruins, once the third largest in South Australia, now heritage-listed. North Yelta's post office operated from 1877 until 1972.
