About Koonunga

Koonunga is a rural locality in the Light Regional Council area of the Barossa, Yorke and Mid North region of South Australia, located about 71 kilometres from Adelaide north of the Barossa Valley. First settled in the early 1840s by Captain Charles Harvey Bagot, the district played a significant role in South Australia's economic development when Bagot and Francis Dutton discovered copper nearby, reversing the colony's poor economic conditions and establishing Australia's first mining town at Kapunda. The area is characterised by agricultural land within Goyder's Line of reliable rainfall.
