About Wondai
Wondai is a rural town and locality in the South Burnett Region of Queensland, located 15.7 kilometres southeast of Murgon and 247 kilometres northwest of Brisbane. Pronounced won-dye, the name is believed to be an Aboriginal word from the Wakawaka language derived from either watya meaning dingo or wandar meaning nape of the neck. First settled in the 1850s with closer settlement in the early 1900s, the town features the Wondai Heritage Museum at 80 Mackenzie Street and multiple historic churches including Anglican, Catholic, Uniting, Baptist, Presbyterian and Lutheran. Notable residents include Test cricketers Carl Rackemann and Nathan Hauritz, country music artist and comedian Chad Morgan, and comedian and writer Mandy Nolan. The economy is based on beef, dairy, grains, duboisia used in antispasmodic drug production and a growing wine industry.
