About Tin Can Bay
Tin Can Bay is a coastal town on the Great Sandy Strait in the Wide Bay-Burnett region of Queensland, about 220 kilometres north of Brisbane, opposite Fraser Island (K'gari). The name is thought to come from an Indigenous word, and the town was known as Wallu until it was renamed in 1937. Settlement began in the 1870s as a timber port for the Maryborough sawmills, and the township was formally established with a land sale in 1922. It became an important fishing port, with prawn trawling from 1957, and the surrounding inlet is a Ramsar-listed wetland and important bird area.
