About Monal

Monal is a remote rural locality in the North Burnett Region of Queensland, located about 371 kilometres from Brisbane. The mountainous terrain features peaks including Mount Graabi and Pine Mountain both at 758 metres, with Monal Creek rising in the north and flowing southward, and sections of Dawes National Park and Pine Mountain State Forest in the east. Named from the pastoral run held by James C. Mackay in 1853, gold was discovered in 1891 and a township of up to 500 people was established along Monal Creek around 1900, though the goldfield yielded limited results and mining had largely ceased by 1912. Historic mining relics including a Cornish boiler brought by a 62-horse team from Gladstone over the Dawes Range can still be seen on the creek bank.
