About Paluma
Paluma is a mountain village in the Mount Spec Ranges of north Queensland, split between the City of Townsville and the Charters Towers Region and the southernmost point of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Named after a Queensland colonial government survey ship, it was once known as Cloudy Clearing and developed after tin was discovered in 1875. The Paluma Road, built as a Depression relief project and opened in 1937, made the village a cool retreat for Townsville; in the Second World War a radar station on the range detected an approaching air raid in July 1942.
