About South Toowoomba
South Toowoomba is a residential locality situated immediately south of the Toowoomba city centre, separated by the Warrego Highway along James Street. Originally surveyed in 1854 as an agricultural suburb with two-acre allotments, the area is bounded by East Creek and West Creek, tributaries of Gowrie Creek that once attracted European settlement to the region. Notable landmarks include the heritage-listed St Patrick's Cathedral (1935) on James Street, St Patrick's Catholic Church (1863), the first in Toowoomba, and Toowoomba South State School (1865), the city's first school. The City Golf Club occupies land through which West Creek flows, while Groom Park preserves the site of a former market reserve. The New England Highway via Ruthven Street serves as the main southern approach to central Toowoomba.
