About Gatton
Gatton is a rural town and the administrative centre of the Lockyer Valley Region in south-east Queensland, a district known as Queensland's Salad Bowl for its vegetable production. The area was explored by Major Edmund Lockyer in 1825, and the town, named after the village of Gatton in Surrey, England, was gazetted in 1855. The former Queensland Agricultural College, opened in 1897, is now the University of Queensland's Gatton campus, a centre of agricultural teaching and research.
