About Drayton
Drayton is a historic rural locality in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland, located on the outer southwestern edge of Toowoomba 6 kilometres from the Toowoomba central business district. Originally known as The Springs from around 1840, Thomas Alford established a store, his home and a post office in August 1842 and named the area after Drayton in Somersetshire, England, where his father Charles Alford was vicar. It was the first substantial settlement on the Darling Downs before Toowoomba surpassed it due to better water access. The heritage-listed Royal Bull's Head Inn, built between 1847 and 1848 by William Horton, is now a National Trust showcase of 1870s life. Drayton State School, established on 16 August 1851, is one of the oldest state primary schools in Queensland. Author Arthur Hoey Davis, known as Steele Rudd, was born in Drayton in 1868.
