About Cranley
Cranley is a rural locality in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland, located 6.9 kilometres northwest of the Toowoomba central business district and 130 kilometres west of Brisbane. Named after James Cranley, a Toowoomba municipal councillor from 1864 to 1866 who was born in County Tipperary, Ireland around 1811 and arrived in Moreton Bay on the ship John Fielden in June 1853. The heritage-listed Baillie Henderson Hospital, built in 1890 and modelled on Britain's Bedlam institution, provides mental health services for the Darling Downs region and is described as Queensland's most intact 19th-century asylum design, added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1999. The Toowoomba Second Range Crossing which opened in 2019 has an interchange at the end of Mort Street providing a new northern entry into Toowoomba.
