Cambooya

About Cambooya

Cambooya is a rural town and locality in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland, located 21 kilometres south of Toowoomba and 148 kilometres west of Brisbane. The name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word with competing translations including tubers growing in a water hole and many winds. European settlement began in 1840 when Arthur Hodgson selected 65,000 acres named Eton Vale, and the townsite was surveyed and named by Commissioner of Crown Lands Christopher Rolleston in 1843. The railway arrived in 1868 and the town became the postal and general centre for properties named after English public schools Eton and Harrow. The heritage-listed Bull and Barley Inn pub, originally opened in 1902 as the Cambooya Railway Hotel, has featured on the TV show Getaway. The town was home to QCWA founder Ruth Fairfax and poet Steele Rudd.
