Landsborough is a town in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, situated at the southern base of the Blackall Range just north of the Glass House Mountains, about 82 km north of Brisbane. Originally called Mellum Creek (from an Aboriginal word for volcano), it was first settled by Europeans in 1871 when Isaac Burgess established a Cobb & Co staging post on the route to the Gympie goldfields. The arrival of the North Coast railway in 1890 spurred development and the town was renamed after William Landsborough, the explorer who first crossed the Australian continent from north to south. Notable features include the heritage-listed former shire council chambers (now the Landsborough Museum), the Cribb Street main street, and Ewen Maddock Dam. The town is a gateway to the Maleny-Montville scenic drive.
