About Sweers Island
Sweers Island is a locality in the Shire of Mornington in Queensland, covering the island of the same name in the South Wellesley Islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 70 km north of Burketown. It was named by Matthew Flinders in 1802 after Salomon Sweers, who had instructed Abel Tasman to explore the Gulf in 1644. Most of the island is Aboriginal freehold land held in trust by the Kaiadilt Aboriginal Land Trust, and Flinders' carved 'Investigator' tree, later rediscovered on the island, is now in the Queensland Museum.
