About Burketown
Burketown is an outback town on the Albert River in Queensland's Gulf country, about 30 km inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria and around 227 km west of Normanton. Founded in 1865 by Robert Towns as a port and supply centre, it was named in honour of explorer Robert O'Hara Burke of the Burke and Wills expedition. The town survived an outbreak of Gulf Fever in 1866 and today serves the region's cattle stations along the Savannah Way. Between August and November, the skies above Burketown display the rare Morning Glory cloud, a drawcard for glider pilots.
