About Staaten
Staaten is a remote locality in the Gulf Country of far north Queensland, within the Shire of Mareeba, through which the Staaten River flows west towards the Gulf of Carpentaria. The river was named in 1623 by a Dutch expedition after the States-General of the Netherlands. Most of the locality lies within Staaten River National Park, which protects the floodplains of the Staaten River and its tributaries as monsoon tropical savanna and melaleuca woodlands and provides habitat for the endangered golden-shouldered parrot.
