About Hungerford (Qld)

Hungerford is an outback border town and locality in the Shire of Bulloo in south-west Queensland, on the Queensland-New South Wales border, where the dingo fence crosses the main street. It grew from a customs post on a stock route beside the intermittent Paroo River, was gazetted as a town in 1875, a year after its first hotel opened, and is named after the drover Thomas Hungerford, who camped at the site. The town lies in Badjiri territory and is famous as the subject of Henry Lawson's 1890s short story 'Hungerford'.
