About Mirani

Mirani is a rural town and locality in the Mackay Region of Queensland, located 37.1 kilometres west of the Mackay central business district. Originally named Hamilton when the Pioneer Valley railway line reached the area in 1885, it was renamed Mirani to avoid confusion with Hamilton in Brisbane. The Yuwibara people are the traditional owners of the land. The Pioneer River passes through the locality from west to north and Lake Kinchant forms the southern boundary. The heritage-listed Mirani railway station is on Victoria Street. Multiple churches built in the early 1900s include Catholic with a foundation stone from 1899, Anglican from 1908 and Presbyterian from 1908. The sugar cane industry is the dominant land use with a private network of tramways transporting cane to Mackay Sugar mills.
