About Lowood
Lowood is a rural town on the Brisbane River in Queensland's Somerset Region, about 66 km west of Brisbane and 31 km north of Ipswich. The name derives from the low brigalow scrub woodland characteristic of the area, replacing earlier local names The Scrub and Cairnhill. The town developed after 1884 as the first terminus of the Brisbane Valley branch railway. A Royal Australian Air Force airfield operated at nearby Mount Tarampa during World War II and was later converted into a motor-racing circuit that hosted the 1960 Australian Grand Prix. The heritage-listed Bank of Queensland building (1901) remains a notable landmark, and the former railway precinct has been repurposed as parkland forming part of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.
