About Leichhardt (Qld)
Leichhardt is a suburb of Ipswich in south-east Queensland, located three kilometres south-west of the city centre on the western bank of the Bremer River. Formerly known as One Mile, the area was renamed in 1953 after Prussian explorer and naturalist Ludwig Leichhardt, who led expeditions through interior Australia in the 1840s and is reputed to have camped along Old Toowoomba Road. Growth accelerated from the 1940s with expansion of the RAAF Amberley base, and the Ipswich Golf Club has operated in the suburb since 1897.
