About Grandchester
Grandchester is a rural village in the City of Ipswich, about 30 kilometres west of Ipswich on the Brisbane to Toowoomba railway line. Originally known as Bigge's Camp, it became the temporary terminus of Queensland's first railway when the line from Ipswich opened on 31 July 1865. The name was Latinised at the suggestion of Governor Bowen, and the heritage-listed railway station, built in 1875, is now operated by the National Trust as a volunteer-run museum.
