About Esk (Qld)
Esk is a rural town and locality in the Somerset Region of South East Queensland, located 64.1 kilometres north-northwest of Ipswich. Named after the River Esk in Scotland and England, the land was first explored by Captain Patrick Logan in 1830. The town was established in 1872 to service the short-lived copper mines of Eskdale and Cressbrook Creek. The Brisbane Valley railway line reached Esk in 1886. The Esk War Memorial, St Agnes Anglican Church and Rectory and St Andrews Presbyterian Church are heritage-listed. Lake Somerset and Lake Wivenhoe are nearby attractions along with Ravensbourne and Crows Nest National Parks. The town was the epicentre of flooding during the 2010-2011 Queensland floods when Redbank Creek burst its banks for the first time in recorded history.
