About Coominya
Coominya is a rural town in the Somerset Region of South East Queensland, about 83 km west of Brisbane, near Wivenhoe Dam. The name comes from the Yuggera language, from words meaning 'to see water', in reference to the area's lagoons, and the town lies on the traditional lands of the Jagera people. The area was known as Bellevue from 1886, and the heritage-listed Bellevue Homestead was moved to Coominya when Wivenhoe Dam flooded its original site. A soldier settlement of grape and fruit farms was established in 1920 but largely failed by 1929. Today the town serves the surrounding farming and olive-growing district, and a former wartime airfield is used for flight training.
