About Acland
Acland is a rural town in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland, on the Darling Downs about 160 km west of Brisbane, that grew around what was Queensland's oldest continuously worked coal mine. The No. 2 Colliery, which opened in 1929 and closed in 1984, is heritage-listed as the most intact mine site of its age and type in the state. After the mine closed, the town's population shrank, and since 2008 the surrounding New Acland open-cut mine has progressively bought out and demolished the remaining buildings, leaving Acland largely a ghost town.
