About Tannum Sands

Tannum Sands is a coastal town and locality in the Gladstone Region of Queensland, Australia, situated on the Coral Sea coast approximately 25 kilometres south-east of Gladstone. Bounded by the Boyne River to the west and Station Creek to the south-west, it is twinned with the neighbouring town of Boyne Island, connected by a bridge opened in 1980. The area was originally known as Redcliff, later renamed Wild Cattle Creek, before receiving its current name derived from a remark made after children returned sunburnt from a Sunday School picnic. The locality encompasses Canoe Point and Wild Cattle Island, the latter largely protected within Wild Cattle Island National Park. Tannum Sands features a surf-lifesaver-patrolled beach and is a well-known fishing and kiteboarding destination with access to the Great Barrier Reef, the Boyne River, and Lake Awoonga.
