About Boyne Island
Boyne Island is a coastal town in the Gladstone Region of Queensland, on the west bank of the Boyne River near its mouth, about 24 km south-east of Gladstone and next to its twin town Tannum Sands. The river was named by explorer John Oxley in 1823; the island was later used for sheep grazing, horticulture, fishing and timber. Today Boyne Island is mainly a residential centre for the nearby Boyne Smelters aluminium smelter, Australia's largest.
