About Stewarton (Qld)
Stewarton is a sparsely populated rural locality in the Central Highlands Region of Queensland, about 23 kilometres south of Blackwater in the Bowen Basin. Open woodland and grassland characterise the landscape, and the Blackwater coal mine, one of Australia's largest open-cut operations with reserves of 877 million tonnes, is physically located within Stewarton. Coal was first discovered in the area by Ludwig Leichhardt in 1845, and multiple railway lines of the Blackwater coal haulage system pass through the locality.
