About Blackwater
Blackwater is a rural town and locality in the Central Highlands Region of Queensland, located 76 kilometres east of Emerald and 196 kilometres west of Rockhampton. Named after the dark colour of local waterholes, coal deposits were first discovered by Ludwig Leichhardt during his 1845 expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington. The town is within a significant coal mining area with six major open cut mines surrounding it. Blackwater Post Office opened on 19 July 1877. The suburb is close to the Blackdown Tableland National Park. Olympic track cyclist Anna Meares and comedian Josh Thomas were born in Blackwater.
