About Yeerongpilly
Yeerongpilly is a southern residential suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, located 8.5 kilometres southwest of the Brisbane GPO. The name is an Aboriginal word with Thomas Petrie recording it meaning rain coming, alternatively derived from yurong meaning rain or yarung meaning sandy with the suffix pilly meaning gully or watercourse. The suburb grew from an area named Boggo which was logged for timber for Brisbane, with land subdivision estates advertised from 1885. The suburb is home to the Brisbane Golf Club established in 1896 with a heritage-listed clubhouse and the heritage-listed Animal Research Institute, a Queensland Government research complex that operated from 1909 to 2011 at 681 Fairfield Road. Multiple heritage-listed sites include the Trainmen's Quarters, Craigilea and the former St Giles Uniting Church. Yeerongpilly railway station provides services to Brisbane, Beenleigh and Ferny Grove.
