About Rocklea (Qld)
Rocklea is a southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, located 11.1 kilometres south-southwest of the Brisbane central business district. Originally called Rocky Waterholes Creek derived from Rocky Waterholes in the area, it was renamed Rocklea after a town in Dorset, England with the opening of the Beenleigh railway line in 1884 as the original name was considered too long. Rocklea is one of Brisbane's most flood-affected suburbs, severely damaged in both the 1974 Brisbane flood and the 2010-2011 Queensland floods when it was Brisbane's worst-affected suburb. The Brisbane Markets occupy a 100-hectare site on Sherwood Road, officially opened on 31 August 1964. The Rocklea Munitions Works opened in November 1941 making small arms ammunition and artillery shells before being repurposed in 1943 to overhaul engines for the US Army Air Force. The suburb is predominantly industrial with many large transport firms.
