Sheldon is a rural residential locality in the City of Redland, Queensland, located 26.5 kilometres southeast of the Brisbane central business district. Officially named in 1980, combining southern portions of Capalaba and northern portions of Mount Cotton, the name likely originated from the village of Sheldon in Devon, England, from Old English meaning steep-sided hill and wooden valley. The locality is predominantly bushland with residential properties on acreage. Tingalpa Creek forms the western boundary and its headwaters form the catchment area for the entire Leslie Harrison Dam providing drinking water for the Redlands. Venman Bushland National Park extends from Mount Cotton into the locality. The Brisbane Koala Bushlands and a significant koala population are protected within the eucalyptus forests. Sheldon College, a private Prep to 12 school, opened in 1997.
