Manly is an eastern bayside suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, situated approximately 20 kilometres east of the Brisbane central business district on the shores of Moreton Bay. The area was originally inhabited by the Mipirimm subclan of the Quandamooka people and is known as Narlung, likely meaning "the place of long shadows." European settlement began in 1859 with the granting of a land purchase to Thomas Jones, and the first homestead, Wyvernleigh, was built by Joseph Lewthwaite. The suburb was named in 1882 when the Manly Beach Estate was auctioned, apparently after Manly in Sydney. Manly Boat Harbour, constructed in 1958, is a major boating facility and home to several sailing clubs, including the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.
