Girraween is an outer semi-rural area in Darwin, located 35 kilometres southeast of the Darwin central business district within the Litchfield Municipality. The name originates from Aboriginal language translating to the place of flowers, derived from Girraween Lagoon, a significant permanent freshwater waterbody spanning approximately 45 hectares nestled amid monsoon forest vegetation. The lagoon holds profound cultural and spiritual importance to the Traditional Owners, particularly the Larrakia people, who have used it for traditional ceremonies, storytelling and connection to Country for millennia. The locality is primarily based on the Girraween Subdivision developed by the Churcher Estate and registered on 29 October 1997. It features small acreage properties with most blocks ranging from 2 to 5 acres. Girraween Primary School has approximately 430 students with outdoor programs including gardens and a school farm. The suburb is in the territory electorate of Nelson and the federal Division of Lingiari.
