About The Rock

The Rock is a town in the Riverina of New South Wales, about 32 km south-west of Wagga Wagga on the Olympic Highway in Lockhart Shire. It is named after the rocky hill that towers above it, a Wiradjuri sacred site called Yerong or Kengal, first recorded by explorer Charles Sturt in 1829. The Rock Nature Reserve, around the 516-metre summit, has a six-kilometre walking track with views over the plains. Known as Kingston until 1919, the town grew around its heritage-listed railway station, where the Boree Creek branch line leaves the main southern line.
