About Timbarra (NSW)
Timbarra is a rural locality on a high granite plateau about 15 kilometres east-south-east of Tenterfield on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales. Alluvial gold was discovered in the district in 1850 and primary gold mineralisation at Poverty Point in the 1870s. The Timbarra Gold Mine, developed by Ross Mining in the late 1990s, closed in 2001 after its cyanide-use controversy drew national attention, and the plateau, rising to around 1,000 metres, carries wet and dry sclerophyll forest.
