About Deepwater (NSW)

Deepwater is a small town and parish on the New England Highway about 40 kilometres north of Glen Innes on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, on the northern bank of the Deepwater River. It stands on the traditional lands of the Ngarabal people, whose name for the area, Talgambuun, means dry country with many dead trees. The Deepwater pastoral run was taken up in 1839, and by the mid-1840s covered some 60,000 acres running thousands of sheep. Wool, fat lambs and beef cattle remain the district's main pursuits, following earlier industries of dairying, tin mining and timber.
