About North Rothbury
North Rothbury is a town in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, about 17 km north of Cessnock in the City of Cessnock local government area. It grew around the Rothbury colliery and is best known as the site of the 1929 Rothbury riot, when police fired on locked-out miners, killing Norman Brown and wounding about 45 others; a memorial to the incident stands in the town. The mine closed in 1974 and its site now houses a railway workshop. North Rothbury sits within the Hunter Valley wine country and supports the critically endangered North Rothbury Persoonia.
