About Greta (NSW)

Greta is a small town on the New England Highway in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, between Maitland and Singleton. Surveyed in 1842, it grew as a coal-mining centre after the Greta Coal Seam was discovered in 1886, with ten collieries operating in the district by 1907. During World War II the Greta Army Camp trained troops, and from 1949 it became one of Australia's largest migrant reception centres, processing over 100,000 new arrivals.
