About East Branxton
East Branxton is a locality in the City of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, located approximately 20 kilometres west of Maitland and 50 kilometres northwest of Newcastle. The area lies on the traditional country of the Wonnarua people and the first European to sight it was William Paterson in 1801. Originally called Black Creek, the area was renamed Branxton in 1848 as the developer believed the original name would not attract buyers. By 1860 it was a village of 500 residents with a steam mill, post office, mechanics institute and four hotels. The locality is adjacent to the renowned Hunter Valley wine region and is associated with the birthplace of Australian wine, with winemaker James Busby planting his first grape vines at nearby Kirkton.
