About Araluen (NSW)

Araluen is a small town near Braidwood in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, set in the valley of Araluen Creek where it joins the Deua River. In the 1850s the valley became one of the state's richest alluvial goldfields, drawing thousands of miners, but a flash flood in 1860 devastated the town. The name comes from the local Walbunga people of the Yuin nation, and traces of the gold-mining era still mark the valley landscape.
