About Hughes (ACT)
Hughes is a suburb in the Woden Valley district of Canberra, established in 1963 as one of the first suburbs in the planned satellite city of Woden Valley. Named after The Right Honourable William Morris Billy Hughes, the seventh Prime Minister of Australia (1915-1923), its streets are named after World War I armed services personnel and contemporaries of Hughes. The suburb features innovative Radburn-model housing layouts and was home to the first underpass built in Canberra, at Kent Street.
