About Freeling
Freeling is a small town in the Light Regional Council area of South Australia, located approximately 60 kilometres north of Adelaide and neighbouring the Barossa Valley wine region. Established in 1860 and named after Major-General Sir Arthur Henry Freeling, Surveyor-General of South Australia, the town was a stopping place on the Gawler to Kapunda railway. Historic buildings include the Freeling Hotel from 1863, the Railway Hotel from 1867 and St Petri Lutheran Church from 1871. The economy is based on cereal crop farming on some of Australia's best agricultural land. Freeling gained fame as a filming location for the television series McLeod's Daughters, which used the town's Gungellan Hotel.
